Designing takes time. To spend the time right, it’s crucial that you’re designing for the right problem. When getting a brief, I therefore always dedicate time to evaluate whether something could be done smarter, simple or cheaper. In this sense, design is not just problem-solving, but problem-setting.
A product needs to both address the client’s wishes and take advantage of the expertise of the designer. Most importantly, though, is that it caters to the desire, problem or need that sits with the target group. You can design for a hit and miss, but it’s costly. Instead design should be based on user research and addressed by the client and designer.
